A gift for a newborn

New babies get a lot of presents, and almost all of them are consumable. Clothes stop fitting in two months, toys are outgrown, sets run out. Usually one thing survives, and it is the one that was chosen deliberately.

Why a bear is the one that stays

A teddy bear is the only gift that travels through every age at once. At one it is squeezed, at seven it is talked to, at twenty it sits on a shelf in a rented flat, and at forty it comes out again when a child of one's own arrives.

A factory toy does not make that journey: it gets lost, worn through and replaced with an identical one. A one-off cannot be replaced, which is precisely why it gets looked after.

But the baby is too small for it

The usual objection, and it is true — it also does not matter. A bear given at birth is not really for the infant; it is for the family. It lives on a shelf, appears in the first photographs, and moves into small hands two or three years later.

The practical note: artist bears are not cot toys. Small trims, beads and ribbons are not for the first year. Let it stand and wait.

Choosing before the baby arrives

Most people buy before the birth. The rule that works: choose neither "girl" nor "boy" but something neutral in colour and character. A muted palette — cream, sand, grey-blue — is always right and does not date, which pink and bright blue do.

And the size: 20–30 cm. Substantial enough to read as a gift, not so large that it takes over the room.

What makes it personal

A name or a date embroidered on the clothing turns the object into a document — years get counted from it later. It is worked by hand, stitch by stitch, and cannot be reproduced: nobody else will ever have that piece.

The same works for twins: two bears in one palette but with different scenes on the clothes, so the children never have to argue about whose is whose.

What to include with it

A note with the maker's name and the date. In twenty years that is the only thing that will explain where the bear came from. Without it, the piece slowly becomes just an old toy; with it, it stays a family story.
